If you have been involved in a car accident, whiplash injuries (aka hyperflexion-hyperextension disorder) need to be taken very seriously. Because symptoms of a whiplash injury can take weeks or months to manifest, it is easy to be fooled into thinking that you are not as injured as you really are.
Too often people don't seek treatment following a car accident because they don't feel hurt. By far, the most common injury to the neck is a whiplash injury. Whiplash is caused by a sudden movement of the head, either backward, forward, or sideways, that results in the damage to the supporting muscles, ligaments and other connective tissues in the neck and upper back.
Unfortunately, by the time more serious complications develop, some of the damage from the injury may have become permanent. Numerous studies have shown that years after whiplash victims settle their insurance claims, roughly half of them state that they still suffer with symptoms from their injuries. If you have been in a motor vehicle or any other kind of accident, don't assume that you escaped injury if you are not currently in pain. Contact us today!
The vehicle accelerates forward and begins to be pushed out from under you. This causes your mid-back to be flattened against the back of the seat and your neck to be compressed upwards and extended backwards over the headrest.
Your body is now accelerating 1.5 - 2 times that of the car itself. The seat begins to recoil forwards while your head is still accelerating and extending backwards causing a hyperextension shearing effect.
The head and torso are accelerating forward, moving within the slack of the seatbelt.
The seatbelt has now stopped your body from moving forwards, but has now created a pivot point for your neck to bend forward over leading to the hyperflexion injuries.
It is the most common complaint from whiplash trauma being reported in over 90% of patients. It will often radiate across the shoulders, up into the head, and down between the shoulder blades. Injuries to the neck usually affect all of the tissues including: facet joints, discs, muscles, ligaments, and nerves. Facet joints are the most common cause of neck pain following a car accident and can only be diagnosed by physical palpation by a trained chiropractor.
This is the 2nd most common complaint following an auto injury affecting more then 80% of all patients.
Tempromandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ) is a less common, but no less debilitating disorder, that can be caused by car accidents. It begins as a pain with clicking and popping noises in the jaw during movement and can lead to headaches, facial pain, ear pain, and difficulty eating.
Mild brain injuries are common due to the forces on the brain during the 4th phase. The brain bounces off the skull causing bruising in the brain itself. This leads to temporary confusion and disorientation after a crash and less commonly can cause patients to lose consciousness and have a mild concussion. Symptoms span a wide range from difficulty concentrating to visual disturbances to a decreased sense of taste.
This is a very common injury, occurring in over 50% of rear impact collisions and 75% of side-impact collisions. This is due to the compression that occurs in the 1st two phases.
Most mild whiplash injuries heal in 6-9 months. However, over 20% of people with whiplash injuries from a car accident suffer for years with pain, weakness, or restricted movement. The most effective treatment for whiplash injuries is a combination of chiropractic care, physiotherapies, rehabilitation of the soft tissues, and at home lifestyle changes.
Chiropractors use manual therapies, called adjustments, to restore the normal movement and position of the spinal vertebrae. It is the single most effective treatment for minimizing the long-term impact of whiplash injuries, especially when coupled with the other therapies listed.
Soft tissues are your muscles, ligaments, tendons, nervous system, spinal discs, and internal organs. It is important to stimulate these tissues to heal correctly in order to minimize permanent impairment and disability. These therapies may include massage, electrical stimulation, trigger point therapy, stretching, and exercises.
Activities of daily living (ADLs) are the 2nd half of the healing equation. How you live and how you work is the main determining factor in reoccurrences and long term prevention of future symptoms.
Initially, zero. We provide a free consultation to anyone who has been in a car accident, will accept all car insurance plans, and are able to defer all fees till after treatment is finalized.
Florida personal injury laws require everyone to have coverage of at least $10,000 for bodily injury and $10,000 for car damages. Many people have a $1000 deductible, and most have a 20% copay as part of their insurance plan. Auto accidents are a complicated affair between dealing with your own insurance company, dealing with the other parties involved, and even dealing with the other person’s insurance. Making sure that all the correct procedures are filed and recorded correctly is not easy and most patients elect to have an attorney to aid them in getting reimbursed for the damages to their vehicle, monies to cover future health costs due to your injuries, and protecting yourself from potential liability claims from the other parties. We are able to defer all costs till after the attorney has settled you case with the insurance company. This means that for most people there are no upfront costs for treatment and the fees you are responsible for can be negotiated with the attorney to a manageable level.
Although no attorney is required for treatment, most patients find it necessary to get help dealing with their insurance company in order to cover damages to their car, as well as when dealing with the other party who might claim you as the responsible party, causing your rates to go up if you are deemed at fault. At Lake Buena Vista Chiropractic we know many different attorneys that we can refer you too, all of which will provide a free consultation to answer any questions that you may have and to see if they could help you.
